Audience, competitors, brand identity and voice! These are just some of the elements to consider when building a brand. I put together this list so business owners like yourself can reference for strong start. There's a lot to go over, and even more than what's included here in this post. But, let's start wit the obvious. Here are 5 easy steps to follow to begin building your brand!

1.) Get to Know Your Audience

  • Demographic & Interests: Age, gender, locations, income, and more. Use your social media pages to discover who is engaging most with your posts. What are their interests? What are their hobbies? Pay attention to #hashtags! Create a campaign in Google Ads that's focused on impressions (views) to gather user data from here as well.
  • Buyer Persona: Use data gathered from your social media and ads campaigns to create detailed buyer profiles representing your ideal customers. Take your time here. Understanding your customers makes it easier for your brand to reach and connect with them.

2.) Perform Competitor & Market Research

  • Direct vs Indirect Competitors: Use industry directories to locate top competitors in your space! Use Google search to find who is ranking for top keyword in your industry.
  • SWOT Analysis: Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Dig into your competitors online performance with popular SEO tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush. Use Google's Market Analysis tool to research market trends or identify possible customers!

3.) Create Your Brand Identity

  • Core Values & Missions Statement: Now that you know your audience, it's time to talk to them! Remember what your business's beliefs and values are. Why does your business exist? What need are you trying to fill? And, what makes you different? Apply this verbiage into your voice and tone and speak directly to your audience!
  • Voice & Tone: What is your business's tone? Serious/funny, formal/casual? Whatever you decide - the importance here is consistency across channels for an optimized user journey and stringer customer engagement! A content style guide is helpful to align the brand's communication style across your website, social media, ads and more!

4.) The Importance of UX/UI: Colors, Themes Logo's & More!

  • Color Palette: Based on your competitor analysis, determine which colors are most associated with your industry. Then, use some basic color theory to find which color best convey the emotion of your brand voice.
  • Fonts & Logo: Put it all together! Get creative here and craft and meaningful logo that incorporates all the research and intention that went along with building your brand. First impressions are everything!

5.) A Unified Customer Journey

  • Consistency is key in building a brand! Nike, Apple, Amazon, etc. Each of them have a seamless customer journey and cohesive marketing ecosystem. Each team works in tandem to boost the impact of the business, and that's what we strive for everyday!
